Teva Extravaganza

Vail is hosting the summer's mountain Olympics, an X-styled extravaganza of paddling, biking, running, and climbing. "What began as a gang of paddling pals racing down the Eagle River," reports Jason Blevins, "has become Colorado's mountain Olympics, an X-styled extravaganza of paddling, biking, running and climbing."

Flying High With Flybar

"It felt like Christmas yesterday," writes Skiing Post blogger Vanessa Pierce. "When I arrived back home from a meeting, I saw an enormous package on the front step. There they were, my Flybars (both the 800 and 1200). These pogo sticks are my new obsession when skiing is out, and biking is in but takes a commitment. ... Being that the light was so amazing, friend Lynsey Dyer (pro skier/photographer) decided to take some shots. Here are a few from about two hours of pogoing. I'm shot."

Vanessa Gets A New Toy

Do you know what the Flybar is? It's a pogo stick that, depending on its style, can bounce up to 6 feet. If you ever have tried a pogo stick (likely when you were a kid), you would be psyched to own one. Skiing Post editor Vanessa Pierce is flying high for that reason. She contacted Flybar to see if the company needed a girl on its freeride team. Now two Flybars are enroute to Jackson Hole where Pierce will bounce around town representing SBI Enterprises, the company to developed the first pogo in 1918.

Jackson To Represent The Flybar

Ohmygod! I'm getting a Flybar 800 and 1200. SBI Enterprises – the company first to develop the pogo stick in 1918 – a couple of years ago created the Flybar 1200 that can bounce up to 6 feet, and now it has developed the more-friendly women's Flybar 800 that can hit about 4 feet.

The adrenaline-fueled Whistler Mountain Bike Park opens May 19. Thanks to 46 feet of snow this season and a current base of 122 inches of snow, besides biking, mountain warriors can still board and ski the snow-covered runs of Blackcomb Mountain until June 3.

Pierce And Crew Ski More Biglines In France

In the Oisans region of the Alps, danger is everywhere and constant. Even for the most experienced guides and skiers, it lurks like a ghost offering signs of its presence with spin drift, avalanche debris, seracs, glaciers, and extremely exposed cliffs. The smart visitors hire guides to reduce the likelihood of accidents like Xavier Cret who is known in La Grave as being one of the best. He is so well respected that Doug Coombs spent 10 years of his life making first descents all over the region with his help.

Ogden Skis Ogre In B.C.

We found our destination, the Ogre. It is much more of a happy peak than its name suggests, and waiting to be taken advantage of (like the town bicycle). We had planned to shred the heck out of it with sled laps, but we still didn’t know what the snow was going to do.

Taking A Breath Of Free Air

There are days when the skiing isn't spectacular and the hiking is horrendous, but the company makes the magic.

Last weekend, Jackson Hole's climbers emerged from traveling in drier climates to gather in revelry. The heart of the operation, Julia Niles, had popped back through Jackson (from her recent trip to Fitz Roy, Argentina) to host a most laid-back dinner party at her family’s cabin in Driggs, Idaho.

Valdez Heli-Camps Caters to Aspiring Athletes

Valdez Heli-Camps announced a new program just for those most avid students of the big mountains with limited pocket books. Those formerly spurned by the high price of the sport, with costs now topping nearly $1,000 per day at most operations throughout North America, now have opportunities with Valdez Heli-Camps.

It's Ski Time In The Absarokas

The first big dump of the season came this weekend unloading fresh powder atop a decent base. It was time. With my ski crew, we decided to head out to Togwotee Pass, about a 65-mile drive from Jackson. This area is known for it’s lighter, almost Colorado-esque powder. Slednecks know it well; it’s one of the most popular sledding destinations in the country.
