With eleven feet (or so) of snow, the Snowbird resort in Utah is both aptly named--and not about to shut down in spring 2008.

Working people in mountain towns that cater to the richest of the rich have a hell of a time finding an affordable place to live. In Park City, that problem is exacerbated by developers in no hurry to comply with City Council requirements. " "I don't think 'dragging their feet' is the right terminology," Councilman Jim Hier said of the developer Talisker. "But they need to know we're serious about the affordable-housing schedule. Hier told reporter Christopher Smart the Council wants to "put some teeth" in a Talisker promise in 1999 to "build 118 so-called work-force units to go along with 914 upscale dwellings in Empire Pass."

Concierge.com has been kind enough to put together some of the best apres-ski places in the world, all under one roof.

COPPER MOUNTAIN, COLORADO (Post Time News)--Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) announced at the organization's 44th Annual Meeting and Forum here that its 26 member resorts hosted more than 12.56 million skier visits--and set a new skier visit record for the second consecutive year in the process.
In all, CSCUSA said Colorado accounts for 23 percent of the domestic ski business. But the trade group also reported Colorado visits increased just 30,000 skier visits over last season.

Nothing screws up your life quite like a great ski season.
We had one of those in Aspen--at least if you can believe the local paper, which said that roughly two out of every three people here in the Roaring Fork Valley said it was a dadgum good or great ski season.
Was it for me? Let me count the ways.

Today the glacier has completely receded from the chutes, making them even more popular and less foreboding. But on the way in, VanLanen caught an edge traversing along the exposed cliff band and had a heart palpitation. Breathing a little heavier, we down climbed over another exposed area before making it into the “1” couloir. Cret pointed to the wall and reminded us: “Twenty people died here that year.”

In the Oisans region of the Alps, danger is everywhere and constant. Even for the most experienced guides and skiers, it lurks like a ghost offering signs of its presence with spin drift, avalanche debris, seracs, glaciers, and extremely exposed cliffs. The smart visitors hire guides to reduce the likelihood of accidents like Xavier Cret who is known in La Grave as being one of the best. He is so well respected that Doug Coombs spent 10 years of his life making first descents all over the region with his help.

There is always untracked powder at Targhee, even a week after a storm. And the ski area is full of the friendliness people. About a week ago, my friends Tom and Jess, joined me for some turns in about 0 degree weather (I didn’t say it is always balmy there) but we got some great powder shots off of Dreamcatcher chairlift. For intermediate skiing powder paradise, Targhee is the place to go. And for extreme hucking, Targhee backcountry is the place to go. Ah, and the view of the Grand Teton’s backside is amazing.
