Rocky Mountain Arms Race

Crested Butte. Steamboat Springs. Winter Park. Snowmass. Arapahoe Basin. Colorado ski resorts are pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into resort upgrades. "The Mueller Family has put $200 million into a base village overhaul at Crested Butte.... Winter Park, which has been among the last to develop its base area, has grand plans for a pedestrian village and already has committed $132 million to the first phase of the project. Intrawest's 2007 purchase of Steamboat Ski Resort also kicked off a building boom in the area.... In its first major move under a new owner, the ski area spent $16 million this summer.... A number of other areas - Copper Mountain, Telluride, Arapahoe Basin, Echo Mountain and Monarch - have opened new ski terrain this season.""

'Breeze' Stores Now Special

The deal by Specialty Sports Ventures to buy Breeze stores includes a little bit of everything--including several cups of joe at Starbucks. "Specialty Sports Venture (SSV) has become an even bigger player in ski rentals and retailing," Post Time News reports. "SSV, a joint-venture majority-owned by Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE: MTN), announced that it entered into an agreement to acquire 18 Breeze Ski Rental shops at locations throughout Colorado, Utah and California for $6.5 million. SSV now has 145 shops in Colorado, Utah, and California, with more growth a distinct possibility."

Specialty Sports 'Breezes' Into Expansion

Colorado Ski Country Up But Just A Little

COPPER MOUNTAIN, COLORADO (Post Time News)--Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) announced at the organization's 44th Annual Meeting and Forum here that its 26 member resorts hosted more than 12.56 million skier visits--and set a new skier visit record for the second consecutive year in the process.

In all, CSCUSA said Colorado accounts for 23 percent of the domestic ski business. But the trade group also reported Colorado visits increased just 30,000 skier visits over last season.

Snow, Sun Hidden Elements in Rankings

If you go to where there’s sun and snow, life will inevitably be good on the slopes. By that criteria, it goes without saying that Utah rules. Consider the 2006 reader survey rankings just issued from SKI Magazine based on a survey of its readers. In the bookend categories of snow and weather—the things that really count on God’s green (white) earth, the old debate about Utah and Colorado is over and done with.

Utah wins hands-down.

Lightning Strikes In Vail

August 1, 2006—(Post Time News) Taking its cue from Aspen Skiing Company, Vail Resorts http://www.snow.comannounced today that it will gladly glean all of its electricity needs from wind power. The 152,000 megawatt-hours purchased by the company through Renewal Energy Choice in Boulder, Colorado, make it the second largest corporate purchaser of wind power in the country behind Whole Foods Markets.

A kicker in the deal is Vail’s promise to provide a free lift ticket in a “Ski With The Wind” promotion to anyone who buys into wind power for their home. Vail Resorts also announced “that each of its executives has personally signed up to purchase wind power for their homes.” And the city of Vail itself is on the verge of moving to wind power to meet all of its energy needs. Wind energy credits guarantee the amount of electricity Vail Resorts uses is replaced onto the power grid with wind power.
