Blackcomb's Glacier Opens June 4

Whistler/Blackcomb is set to open the Horstman Glacier Monday, June 4. Open through the end of July, the Horstman Glacier offers intermediate skiing and riding for those looking to extend skiing into the summer.

Exclusive Q&A With Whistler's Michelle Leroux

Michelle Leroux is the PR and communications manager at Whistler/Blackcomb. She was one of the key players responsible for creating one of the biggest girls contests to come to the ski and snowboard industry ever. If Ullr Was a Girl was born in April 2006 and culminated with a three-tier contest in Whistler/Blackcomb in April 2007. She loves working and living in Whistler, and here’s why ...

Vanessa Gets A New Toy

Do you know what the Flybar is? It's a pogo stick that, depending on its style, can bounce up to 6 feet. If you ever have tried a pogo stick (likely when you were a kid), you would be psyched to own one. Skiing Post editor Vanessa Pierce is flying high for that reason. She contacted Flybar to see if the company needed a girl on its freeride team. Now two Flybars are enroute to Jackson Hole where Pierce will bounce around town representing SBI Enterprises, the company to developed the first pogo in 1918.

Big-Time Skiing At The Ullr Big-Mountain Contest

Dyer dropped into the 40-to-50-degree face on Blackcomb’s Chainsaw Ridge, skiing fast through the exposed rocks, above a 100-foot cliff. She then snuck around it to line herself up for a 30-foot air – and stomped it. The crowd went wild. Then, for round two, she did it again just as simply. Though it hasn’t been officially announced, the judges told Dyer that she won.

Ullr Girls Pogo Freestyle At Contest

We all knew the girls invited to compete in the Ullr Girl contest were talented skiers and snowboarders, but the art night proved that these girls can throw down in more ways than one.

The Glacier Shop is where the event took place. Imagine slideshows projected on to the walls, a DJ section on construction scaffolding that looked hot of course, and free liquor for all the quests. This was a private party that people wanted to get in. And many of the who's who is skiing did. Besides Grete, Sarah, Lynsey, Ingrid (Backstrom) and Mike Douglas joined me to do a little freestyle pogo sticking.

The 14 girls (10 pros, 4 amateurs) had five minutes to show off their art or cultural talents. The winner was one step closer to claiming the Ullr Girl crown that will be announced this weekend. The winning pro gets $25,000. I'm here as support crew for my SheJumps partner, Lynsey Dyer. If she wins the cash purse, it will all go toward the SheJumps foundation fund to help women on the verge of making their dreams come true.
During the contest, many of the girls displayed their brilliant art. Lynsey introduced her slide show by pogo sticking on to the stage with her crew (me and some friends), and then showed the crowd illustrations and photography of her travels around the world. Snowboarder Vanessa Stark brought cupcakes to sweeten up the audience and created a massive art installation of her oil paintings. Meg Olenick, being the comedienne she is, showed a video of snow falling for about three minutes. And Mercedes Nicoll walked everyone through a hilarious how-to video on paper majetting.

But the crowd favorites were the entertainers. Grete sang a Chinese song that she had received extra credit for in her college language class. She won. The "Notorious B.E.V." placed second with a rap song about Ullr. And snowboarder Dominique Vallee got third with a flashy dance routine.

"There have been a lot of firsts this week at the Ullr contest," the pro snowboarder said.

But the post party was the best. The SheJumps girls got props for whipping everyone's ass in a freestyle pogo contest. I did a no hander, no footer, chugged a beer while pogoing, and jumped up a stair, stalled, and kept on going.

So far Grete is in the lead with two wins (Stompede and art contests). But Lynsey is in the running. Stay tuned.

Lynsey Dyer Takes A Jump

"Oh you'll be laughing at us in the big-mountain contest," said Olenick when we ran into her and Grete grabbing breakfast before "warm up." All of the girls seemed super supportive, and out to have fun, which was comforting when Lynsey got a two-minute inspection (because we were late) of the venue that included everything that looked intimidating and nothing that looked fun. Lynsey said Sarah was helpful. "Do the box," she said, "that's easy." So she followed her advice, and then perched atop the 30-foot upward slide, turned around, and came back down. Grete was the only other girl to make it to the top of that thing, and she won the qualifier. Lynsey was beaming when I saw her afterward.

Intrawest Skier Visits Up, Revenues-Per-Skier Down

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (Post Time News)—Intrawest Corp.’s fiscal 2006 results show that skier visits and non-skier revenues are up while revenues-per-skier declined.

Skier visits increased 6 percent from 6,322,000 in 2005 to 6,688,000 in 2006 resulting in a $21.3 million increase in mountain segment revenue. Non-skier revenue bounded up by $18.2 million, while skier revenues declined $2.3 million . The company defines revenues-per-skier-visit as “a function of ticket prices and ticket yields, and revenue from non-ticket sources such as retail and rental stores, ski school, and food and beverage services.”

The Intrawest fiscal 2006 report was chock-full of interesting data, including the news that performance of the company in the West exceed results posted in the East.
